Description

Project objective:
A new type of data-enabled improved cook stove and PAYGO fuel-supply solution will be tested in Lusaka, Zambia. Data collected from the cook-stove is expected to verify use, reduce system downtime and unlock operational efficiencies to further improve affordability and thereby increase the penetration of the cook stoves and the pellets resulting in sustained development impact.

A new type of data-enabled improved cook stove and PAYGO fuel-supply solution will be tested in Lusaka, Zambia. Data collected from the cook-stove is expected to verify use, reduce system downtime and unlock operational efficiencies to further improve affordability and thereby increase the penetration of the cook stoves and the pellets resulting in sustained development impact.

Description:
One of the main distribution challenges encountered is that the customers, who typically live below the poverty line, can only afford the stoves if payed over long time. This increases credit risk for Emerging Cooking Solutions. This project will remedy this by introducing a GSM-based PAYGO functionality, which will turn off the stoves if the user has not paid for it – a feature which is one of the key reason for the successes in the solar sector over the past years. This will improve affordability even further by allowing even longer payment terms with reduced risk, reduce operational efficiencies and optimise default rates, resulting in sustained development impact. It will deliver a comparative market test of a non-data enabled product with the enhanced systems, comparing baseline, manually gathered information with real-time system performance user behaviour, identifying opportunities and necessary actions to increase and sustain system usage, reduce system/fuel downtime and organisational efficiencies. Finally, the project improves business processes and business model to facilitate the scaling of the PAYGO data-enabled solution.

The project will deliver 3000 (2500 data enabled and 500 base model) Tier 4 clean cookstoves to urban and peri-urban charcoal cookstove users in Lusaka, combining technology specifically developed to improve energy access.

Expected results:
- 2500 first-of-its-kind, Tier 4, data enabled, PAYGO financed clean cookstoves delivered to Lusaka households
- 45 sales agents and customer service operatives employed
- 9500 tCO2e saved over the project period
